Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl) Explained

How does hypochlorous acid work?

In the body, white blood cells (neutrophils) produce hypochlorous acid as part of the human immune / defence system. These neutrophils seek out invasive pathogens like bacteria and viruses and destroy them using hypochlorous acid, binding with the unsaturated lipid layer and disrupting the cellular integrity.

Commercially produced HOCl works in exactly the same way, offering maximal antimicrobial properties across all surfaces. HOCl is a powerful oxidising agent, killing a vast spectrum of bacteria, viruses and spores by destroying the cell membranes and proteins.

What is Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl)

What is the difference between hypochlorous acid and sodium hypochlorite?

Although both belong to the chlorine family, they are two very different products.
1. Sodium Hypochlorite, chemical formula NaClO, is highly alkaline and therefore irritating and corrosive to the skin, lungs and eyes and must be handled and disposed of with great care.
2.Hypochlorous Acid, formula HOCl, however, is a weak acid, formulated to be near physiological pH (pH 7) which is the same pH level as the human body. It is not corrosive or irritating and requires no special handling or disposal requirements yet is 80x – 100x more effective than sodium hypochlorite.
Hypochlorous acid is approved by the Food and Drug Administration, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Organic and the World Health Administration. It sanitizes surfaces, killing the COVID-19 virus in 10-15 seconds. Yet it is safe for the skin and is even food-safe at the right potency.

Is Hypochlorous Acid safe?

Hypochlorous acid is non-toxic and non-hazardous. Unlike most chemical sanitizers, hypochlorous acid is non-irritant to eyes, skin, and the respiratory tract. Even if it were ingested by accident, it causes no harm.

Technology Explained

Electro-Chemical Activation (ECA) is the generation of safe, effective, environmentally friendly disinfectants and cleaners by passing ordinary water containing low concentration saline or dissolved sodium chloride (NaCl) or less than 0.25% brine through an electrolytic cell.

Traditional electrolysis cells are only capable of generating small volumes of unstable, high pH oxidized water and the formation of hypochlorite (bleach).

KLEOMax™  (Model KMX-01) utilizes electrolytic cells where the anode electrode plate (Titanium Ruthenium-Iridium Coated) is separated by a unidirectional permeable membrane from the cathode electrode plate. This allows migration and separation of the ions to prevent the production of gaseous chlorine (Cl2) while generating large volumes of neutral pH HOCl that is highly biocidal, but has a very low chemical load as compared to Sodium hypochlorite.

Traditional of Electrolysis

Electrolysis is the passing of a direct electric current through an ionic substance. It was first explained by Michael Faraday in the 1830s.

KLEOMax™ (KM-A01) as a basic grade utilizes this technology.

Membrane Electrolysis

Membrane electrolysis generates strongly or stable acidic HOCl and an alkaline byproduct of NaOH from a solution of NaCl (aka. table salt in water).

KLEOMax™ (KM-B01) as a premium grade utilizes this technology.

Cell Electrolysis Module

It is the modified membrane electrolysis by just put it into a modular form for Industrial usage.  Electrolysis Water of both Hypochlorous acid – HOCl and Sodium Hydroxide can be generated separately and continuously from this type of technology.

Natural Disinfection

KLEOMax™ be one of the best life saving disinfection during COVID-19 pandemic

Better Cost Saving

It’s possible to achieve up to 90% chemical cost reduction by replacing conventional chemicals with the natural ECA solutions. The estimate cost per gallon is only 4 cents or 0.6 Bahnt per litre.

Hotel/Hospitel Disinfection

Hotel sanitizing and disinfecting, protect their surfaces against the threat of harmful microbes. We understand the importance of creating a cleaner and more hygienic environment so those who work or stay at your hotel can have greater peace of mind.

Human and Environmental Safe

KLEOMax™ is a one-step cleaner and broad-spectrum sanitizer and disinfectant treatment that harnesses the power of HOCl (hypochlorous acid) solution. It is a 100% natural and efficient cleaning agent making it the smart, environmentally friendly choice. As mentioned above, HOCl is 100% natural and safe to handle.

Frequently asked questions

The overwhelming impediment to its widespread use has been a lack of shelf stability. HOCl is the most reactive ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species). This means it reacts very easily and will quickly turn back into salt water. HOCl solutions have been used for over 100 years. in the early 1900’s during the World Wars, HOCl solutions were used for disinfecting medical equipment and dressing wounds. However, until recently, HOCl solutions would only remain stable for about 90 minutes before turning back into salt water.

SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, is officially one of the viruses that HOCl can takedown. The EPA recently added the ingredient to their official list of disinfectants effective against the coronavirus.

1. It’s the same substance created by your own immune system.
Our bodies create hypochlorous acid to fight infection and promote healing. As our white blood cells respond to pathogens, our immune systems generate HOCl to kill microorganisms and neutralize toxins and inflammation. HOCl is used in veterinary medicine, ophthalmology, and wound care. How cool is that?

2. It’s used in dermatology
Hypochlorous acid’s antimicrobial superpowers are being harnessed by dermatologists for fighting acne and skin infections. They are also using it to soothe and repair skin damaged by chronic skin conditions like eczema, rosacea, and psoriasis.

3. It is designated 100% SkinSafe
The Mayo Clinic designed SkinSafe to help consumers avoid common allergy-causing ingredients across all types of products. Their 100% skin safe designation is reserved for products that exclude the top most common allergens and those that are best for sensitive skin, including KLEOMax in the household cleaning category.

Hypochlorous acid is created with specific concentrations of simple, household ingredients: salt, vinegar and water, which are then electrolyzed (ie an electrical current is used to change the chemical composition of them). Conventional cleaning products commonly contain harsh irritants, like bleach and ammonia, and ingredients that can trigger allergies and asthma, like fragrances.

4. It can help with “maskne” (face mask acne)
As a gentle antimicrobial, hypochlorous acid has gained popularity during the coronavirus pandemic for helping to reduce skin conditions that are exacerbated by mask-wearing. This type of acne (acne mechanica) is found when we have to wear equipment like athletes who wear helmets. To combat what’s been termed “maskne,” dermatologists are using HOCl concentrations to help reduce bacteria that builds upon the skin as a result of trapped sweat and makeup “like a hand sanitizer for your face.”

5. It’s an extra, on-the-go protective measure.
While nothing can replace effective handwashing, hypochlorous acid at the concentration used in Force of Nature is gentle enough to clean your hands. In a pinch or on-the-go, a spray bottle of Force of Nature’s hypochlorous acid solution is a skin-safe solution for cleaning your hands.

hypochlorous acid, an antimicrobial agent (antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal) that is safe for use on all tissues. It is even safe if it is ingested by an animal.

Stabilised Hypochlorous is a revolutionary breakthrough in healthcare with many 100 times the effectiveness of standard antiseptics while proven to be 100% safe, other antiseptics struggle to achieve the 99.999% efficacy required for a Standard EN13727 test, whereas a good and well-produced HOCl formulation can achieve 99.99999% efficacy on the same test; a 100 fold improvement in efficacy, whilst still remaining nontoxic, non-irritant and skin pH neutral.

Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl) in Electrolyte Water or Electro-Chemical Activation (ECA) has a great potential in sanitization and disinfection with cost effective against any Chemical agent.
